Kouichi is genuinely one of the most interesting protagonists I've ever read in media. I already adore when protagonists start to form an identity split from the player especially if they seem to be a "self insert" but the specific way Kouichi is written feels so interestingConstantly repressing emotions, numbing himself, a hollow shell for the narrative, but unfortunately for the narrative, he is slowly becoming a whole person again.
Unrelated from the musings on Kouichi, shout out to Kouichi half awake kissing Kanae thinking she was Mamoru and the way he realizes it's not Mamoru is because it feels like he's kissing a girl. Shout out Kouichi our bisexual king who gets so much game he can tell if he's kissing a girl or guy without seeing.

This VN is so dangerous to play when not home alone, cuz you never know when you're gonna get tit flashbanged by Ichiki's mom and KurameICHIKI POPPING A BONER AND KURAME JUST FUCKING SAYING "Big!" MADE ME LOSE MY SHIT
And then we're back like nothing happened, I love the absurdity of VNs who's ero scenes are clearly forced in for sales.
I also love that immediately we learn that Yoshino is Itsuki's step-mom and they're not biologically related at all, which, makes the previous scene like, 0.000.000.0001% less uncomfortable lol
But nonetheless we're now learning that basically all of Itsuki's biological family is dead, Yoshino and Jun both aren't related to him. His bio mom is long dead and his bio sister and father committed suicide together.
And no wonder why he keeps Jun at a distance, Jun's literal first words to Itsuki after he loses his memory is that he should be dead with the rest of them.

This visual novel still has one of the fucking strangest openings in anything ever.
Like you get this really gripping dialog of someone throwing themselves off the top of a school building and an interesting monologue about our protagonist's hallucinations.
Then you get jumpscared by a hallucination of his step-sister and she flashes her pussy at you.
Fucking love being a visual novel fan.
The dialog of the extremely out-fo-touch news presenter insisting that teens keep talking about suicide and self-harm for the sake of it being akin to a 'fashion' and immediately comparing it to people claiming to be communists is so insane but feels so fucking real.
"suicidal people and commies are just attention seekers" basically
And then it's just followed up by this, this VNs squishy as fuck art style
tbf this is one of the VN's more coherent CGs, but god the tone whiplash in this VN is so fucking great.

Ok, first of all, got taken aback by there being options, basically Mamoru is spending a lot of time with Emi and Koichi is getting suspicious, the options are whether or not you make him stop.
I chose everytime to not stop Mamoru or follow him and, got some super interesting dialog from Koichi.
He was intensely confused, he was angry and needed to see if Mamoru was cheating on him, so why isn't he? It borderline seemed like he was talking to me directly asking why I won't let him. Whether or not it was an intentional 4th wall break I can't tell due to just Japanese grammer structure, probably meant to be both, he's talking to himself and thus by extention you (the player).

Oh shit right this is the first Japanese VN I'm reading with options and multiple routes, I'm gonna go through this vn without a guide, not that I probably could. There's definitely guides with how much of an influence Kusarihime was for modern VN horror but they're probably all in Japanese, really looking forward to this VN to get a proper translation.
I'm never gonna stop gushing about the art in this btw, it's so creatively done, love when visual novels don't do the traditional sprite method.

Holy shit I didn't think I'd get to this ending/scene so soon.
Koichi falls into the narrative, being engulfed by the typical hero and heroine roleplay, and Emi just, breaking.
The way Emi's voice actress speaks is fucking haunting, her usual very romantic and mature voice turned monotone, she's forced to give up on Koichi, like a therapist having to accept they can't save their patient.
And the yelling, god, it hurts, Okugawa Kumiko is fucking amazing.
"Give me back Oyanagi Koichi!" fuck man.

Kanae being a 'lesser' character in this narrative just because she looks more 'bland'
Kanae is in general an extremely tragic character, a girl with a troubled past forced into the side character role, another woman for the protagonist to fuck, just comic relief, nothing more, pushed aside for the more 'traditional' beauty of Yuuko.
Shout out to their gay tension tho, yuri win.
Fuck, this "ending" is fucking heartbreaking, the implication that when Koichi follows along with the narrative that he and Mamoru are ultimately unhappy despite claiming to be so, because how could they be unhappy? They have THE pure love! But god this CG is beautiful, might be my favorite CG in any visual novel.

Sadly a bunch of the JP visual novels I downloaded from the Internet Archive files corrupted (I probably fucked up something in the extraction process) BUT another one of my biggest dream VNs wasn't!
I love the art style so much, it's so incredibly original, it's kinda like the og Higurashi art style in the sense it has a lot of aspects of classic anime moe art with a lot of originality in it.
It also looks like the machine translator has a lot of an easier time translating it, probably because Suisenka is so poetic with it's writing while Kusarihime seems a lot more straight forward.
Just uh, minus the fact that it likes to translate our protagonist's name "Itsuki" as "Goki" for some reason.

GOD I love the scene where Koichi listens in on the conversation between Mamoru and Kanae, Koichi feeling intense anger and jealousy but being completely unable to understand why. He himself expresses confusion on why he feels heartbroken instead of joy at this sweet interaction.I wonder what Emi's history in this mansion is, she comes off as if she's a therapist of some sort.
I'm still pretty early in but it seems like a majority of the time we actually see what Koichi is saying is when he's talking to Emi.
Oh I fucking love this scene, Koichi comes to fucking close to awakening to the fact that Mamoru and his connection goes deeper than just him being the heroine to his hero, just for Mamoru to reassure him that he is the protagonist of Suisenka and does not need to think further, along side Mikado resetting the scene back to the eroge scene that got cut off earlier.

God I've been reading so much Subahibi I forgot that eroge doesn't make me feel uncomfortable.
But I love how this visual novel is staged so much, the ui is very very pretty and strange, the cheering like there's a crowd, the need to redo scenes over and over again to make them perfect, I love it.

holy FUCK the music that plays when Sayo stops Mamoru and Koichi from leaving the mansion is so fucking good, I hope this VN gets enough of a cult following for all of the BGM to get uploaded to YouTube.I've been adoring the tiny sprinkles of intrigue, you find yourself in a seemingly normal anime silly scene or eroge scene but constantly, something is off. Why does Koichi seem to insist that the outside world is dangerous? Why are Mamoru and Koichi's dialogs so ominous for playing the roles of protagonist and main lady? I mean, I know why, but I won't say.
Even though he is one of the people who insisted that leaving the mansion is dangerous, he himself is confused on why he feels tht way, especially with Sayo enforcing it.

Seeing Megu and Satoko interacting with Zakuro gives me so much fucking dread, god, also pain, both Zakuro and Kimika kind of just, trying to go-along with anything they do in a desperate attempt to avoid getting harmed is too real.

Considering Takuji is reading a book, I think it's safe to say Yuki is fronting, this dialog is extremely familiar too. Hearing Takuji's VA speak in Yuki's cadence is so cool, shows the talent of a VA.
I wonder if weird and awkward Takuji and fucked up and evil Takuji are deperate alters, maybe a weird blurry line between being separate and not, I've heard that happening with DID systems before.
The lighting does make it look like their hair is dark brown, but the fact that it's almost black makes me wonder if it's actually Yuuki, but again, the dialog is extremely familiar.

To give context since I kinda just stopped logging at some point bc I got THAT invested, where I'm currently in TJ's route they've discovered one of Sydney's old scavenger hunts, Chase, TJ, and the others are now currently doing it to find closure in Sydney's death, however the level of things that are intact is now starting to freak Chase out along side the fact that the hints keep implying that Chase is hiding something from the rest of the group. Chase suspects that Flynn is the one making it since he's been causing shit this whole trip.Currently at the beach scene, I currently suspect that it's either genuinely done by childhood Sydney, or that Chase has been doing it the entire time without realizing, since he keeps having moments of intense fatigue and intensely vivid nightmares, but the scene beforehand seems to point away from it since he seems to just be fucking with the last one.
Anyways wow Chase is kind of a piece of shit, I kinda had that assumption going in since all of these characters seem like they have major demons, but god he feels like a particular asshole right now. It's clear as day that he's beginning to view TJ as "his", I mean he said so himself when he felt jealousy towards Julian, he's just not restraining it anymore.

The music is so pretty in this.
The backgrounds and setting give me a fuck ton of nostalgia too, it completely went over my head originally but Echo takes place in Echo, Utah, somewhere I've been, which is super fucking cool to see.
Actually, I was gonna hide it for the sake of anonymity but I think it's interesting enough context and it's such a big location that it doesn't matter, I grew up in Utah! So the location of this VN is extremely nostalgic for me, also explains why TJ is such a devout Jesus fan.
This is also the first visual novel in awhile I've been physically unable to stop reading, it's that good. So much that my log isn't probably gonna be that detailed, complete tunnel vision.

I've always wanted to properly finish this game but I always end up feeling the need to start over. But god I'm so obsessed with how weird this game is structured, I can only really describe it as a strange puzzle game where the puzzle is putting together what's going on with all the characters.
Touko's voice actress does such a good job at feeling so so sweet, so is Lain's voice actress here, she really does feel like a different person from anime!Lain.

Lowkey, I know I've been talking about how much of a piece of shit Takumi he is, I also have the intense urge to call him my favorite problematic autism rep. Totally not because I too also assume every stranger who wants to get to know me better is secretly plotting against me bc I'm a gross nerd.Also I think the specific genre of "tragic but completely disgusting male protagonist" might be one of my favorite types of characters, thanks visual novels.
God I hate the moments I relate to this guy, wanting to cut off any potential connection with real life people out of the intense expectation that they'll just automatically hate me the moment they actually figure out who I am and being inherently resistant to someone who's genuinely accepting.

Just completed chapter 1 last night and ohh my god.

The MOMENT it clicked it my head it was Eva I felt fucking terrifed, she was one of my guesses but I was pretty convinced it was Kai for most of it.Eva really did expose herself as actually being the Ultimate Liar, in a sense. Her exposing for everyone how truly egotistical and manipulative she really was this entire time, her persecution complex growing so intense that she fucked over those who COULD'VE helped her, Diana and Damon.
Eva grew an intense ego to protect herself just for it to be what kills her, and her death proving Damon's toxic thought process right, god. AND DIANA TAKING WOLFGANG'S PLACE WAS NOT WHAT I WAS EXPECTING!!
Also, oh my god the fucking scene of the drugged of Wolfgang, it's very clear that what he was hallucinating was his mom then his dad, seeing his dad triggering violent aggression. My current theory is that either Wolfgang's dad is closely connected to the killing game OR the more insane one, Tozu IS Wolfgang's dad.
The supposed trial ruinner dying first and the supposed support being the first killer, this is the fucking anti-Danganronpa game.

It's so unsettling that since they used one of Ayana's sprites instead of drawing her into the CG she's looking directly at the player, she definitely knows about the fourth wall, she probably just doesn't give a shit.

About halfway through the trial, the fake-out of Diana potentially being the killer felt pretty well done, I did feel like it seemed too obvious but also I almost believed it because of the simple fact that this is the first chapter, the first one is usually the easiest to put together, but they came to the conclusion wayyy too fast, especially when my friend said that the trail is "DRV3 long"
I am very confident that it's Kai and that makes me so so sad, I was starting to absolutely adore this guy, and the fact that he was starting to bond with Damon is just gonna prove his need to seperate himself from the rest of the cast. He's panicked constantly sure but he seemed, specifically insistent on Diana.
What I think happened is that for one reason or another that Wolfgang was dying for a prolonged amount of time, since so far Diana is implied that she did WITNESS Wolfgang dying but didn't see the killer.

it's been long enough since I've read any of this that honest to god for the most part all I remembered was Takuji fucking Zakuro's desk, but it's kinda coming back to me.
We're having confirmation that Takuji is the one who sent ominous texts from Zakuro's phone it seems.
Watching the domino effect unfold as Zakuro's obsession with a conspiracy over the world ending spread over to Takuji's severely distorted mind is an extremely interesting one to witness and feels like an actually accurate portrayal of how obsurd conspiracies spread.
Takuji's never ending dialog of random kinda related shit feels so much more realistic to a very mentally ill mind than I've ever seen before, saying from experience (NOT CALLING TAKUJI ME FR, TAKUJI IS STILL PRETTY GROSS BUT HE'S A FASCINATING CHARACTER)

Been playing this game with a group of friends and it's been SO GOOD. It's genuinely everything I wish Danganronpa was. The cast is incredibly likeable and all intriguing, not a single one feels like a throwaway character doomed to die. And that makes the deaths all the more painful.
Chapter 1 spoilers
Wolfgang being the first death was NOT what I was expecting at ALL, my brain was so wired to Danganronpa rules of "the opposite to the protagonist always either lives or dies late" that I didn't even consider it. But it's honestly a genius first death, really sets the tone of this is NOT Danganronpa, anything could happen.
