The Internet Was Once A Place
I grew up on the internet way too young, but because of that I got to witness first hand how harshly the internet has changed.
What was once the perfect space for free expression, creativity, and community for those who could not access community locally has become another tool for money and control.
The internet was once a place that you go to on your computer, now it's a constant force whether you like it or not, ingrained in our phones built to be inherently addictive.
Social media being a long cry from what it once was, and what it hasn't been since MySpace. Though MySpace wasn't pure either.
Most social media being built specifically to do whatever it can to make you never fucking put it down, including pissing you off or making you feel fucking miserable.
The internet was supposed to bring us together from distance, but now it isolates us more than ever. But you can do something about it. It's called abandoning social media and making your own website!
There are plenty of resources to teach you how and many free website hosters such as my beloved Neocities, even as search algorithms just get progressively worse as they become more and more built to waste your time to profit as much as possible. I will be linking my resources page here once my website is fully updated.
The internet is not dead, it is being buried alive.
Information and Education for ALL
One of the absolute best things that the internet has done is create a nearly endless sea of information, The Internet Archive being my personal favorite example, the amount of information and data it having meaning that if The Internet Archive were to disappear it would be an information loss on par with The Burning of the Library of Alexandria.
Education and Informaton is the greatest power for people in their lives, a lack of education or information on one thing or another being something very frequently weaponized.
Gaps in information has the ability to lead people down rabbit holes such as the conspiracy theorist pipelines believing the truth is being obscured to them when odds are they are either missing information that was not taught to them or they are noticing real problems but are attributing them incorrectly. Many conspiracy theories having roots in Nazism and Eugenism.
Such as the conspiracy theory of the ancient civilization of Atlantas having extremely direct ties to Nazis (source)
Information is also a major key to prevent those from falling down pits of hate, particularly hate for specific groups of people, as a lot of hate groups hinge on information being obscured, such as peddling long disproven eugenic papers. (The more sources I add the weirder I feel, but hey, maybe someone will listen)
Education and information that is widely accessable is one of the keys to a healthy community. Always stay curious.
Actual Free Speech and Free Expression
There has been a lot of people in recent times that claim to be big believers of free speech but have displayed over and over again that they do not truly believe that.
If you do not believe every human has the right to speak their mind regardless of what it is, you are not someone who believes in free speech.
Even the most disgusting individual deserves the basic human right to speak freely as censorship of even the most disgusting ideals is a slippery slope, such as the historical pattern of weaponizing "protecting children" as a method to censor and silence groups of people. An excellent example being the Healthy Development of Youths bill that was pushed in Japan, being triggered by a genuinely disgusting pedophilic manga and infamously claimed that non-existant fictional children needed to be protected from harmful media in it's initial, just for when the bill passed manga such as Love-Ru Darkness with it's exposed titties and incest was deemed a-ok (source) but the primary manga genre that got censored the most frequently were manga about gay men. (source)
If you know LGBT+ history this is sadly a tale as old as time. (if you wanna learn more, please watch Hazel's video on infamous anime Eiken)
Just because someone is a 'degenerate' in your eyes doesn't give you the right to strip them of their humanity, allow your world view to be challenged.
On a more personal opinion part as I feel the reflexive need to prove shit with ~facts and logic~ I want to bring up the KOSA bill specifically because as someone who grew up on the internet too young, this bill is very blatantly just an excuse from those up top to get their grubby hands on more information about you, the people who have the responsibility of protecting minors and children is their parents, not companies or the government, as well as I still feel like the internet has lost it's many safe places for children online, ToonTown and Club Penguin are long gone and I think everyone knows that Roblox hasn't been safe for children for a long time.
We need to build more tables for children to sit at, not force them into the corner and be shocked when they climb onto the adult's table. Children deserve to have somewhere safe that's still away from their parents, but that need has been weaponized time and time again for censorship as apposed to actual change.
And regardless, free speech doesn't inherently give someone the pass to say horrid things, they have freedom to be a piece of shit and you have the freedom to call them out for being a piece of shit. If you believe those who challenge your thoughts is infringing on your right of free speech, you don't know what freedom of speech is
Love and Acceptance
Yeah yeah sooo cliche but it's true. Humans are social creatures and because of that even the most reclusive of us will start to mentally degrade when isolated.(source)
Facts do infact care about your feelings (god I felt myself die inside writing that) as being in a place of love and belonging not only just, makes you feel good, but also can actively help your own physical and mental health. (source)
And even with all the hyper-clinical shit aside as I feel the need to bring them up as justification to those who don't implicitly understand why love and acceptance is a good thing and why being constantly angry and hateful is a bad thing, inherently I believe love and acceptance is one of the many keys to a healthy society.
I don't care if someone self identifies as an animal, goes under a gender identity I have never heard of, has any religious belief or none at all, or god forbid, they don't look like me, everyone, EVERYONE deserves to feel loved and accepted for who they are.
Being a loving accepting person also doesn't mean you accept people who are actively harmful, I am not a Christian or even religious in any way, but if Jesus Christ, the fucking symbol of love and acceptance despite many Christians falling for the belief that empathy is a sin, can tell off a man for blaming a woman and how she dresses as the source of his lust and not himself (Matthew 5:29) then I think everyone can practice love and acceptance with nuance.
I love people and all the weird different variations they can come in, and I think you should too.
